I figured I have way too many pics and way too many details to bombard everyone with a huge long post, plus I don’t have enough time at once to do it that way, so I’m going to break it up into a post for each day in the hospital, and also a post for the happenings leading up to it all. This first post will probably answer most of your questions, but for my family’s sake, I’m documenting it all in as much detail as I possibly can!
Saturday, after Carson’s birthday party, we went to the park around 2:30 pm. Devon seemed fine, although he did decide he didn’t want to ride his bike once we got to the end of our street. I wonder if pedaling hurt him at all.
We left the park about 3:30 pm. The whole time at the park he was running around, playing with the walkie talkies, and just having fun. We live pretty close to the park, just a few blocks away. So we got to his bike, and Devon threw himself on the ground and said he was just too tired to ride it, and started to complain that his stomach hurt. So I cheered him on and he made it home, but he looked exhausted. His cheeks were flushed, but it was pretty hot outside so I didn’t think much of it.
I put Bailey down for a nap and turned on a show for the boys. I walked downstairs to put something away, and noticed Devon still looked pretty flushed, and was laying on the ground looking like he was miserable. I asked how he felt and he said fine, just really tired. He felt really hot, so I took his temperature and it was 101.3. He went to bed at 6:00 pm. He has a friend whose mom told me he was sick and feverish, so I thought maybe it was just him getting that. Poor Devon, because he had the stomach flu twice, his latest one lasting longer from the 1st of the month. I just felt bad for him if he was getting sick again.
Sunday we woke up, and he seemed fine. His fever was like 99.4 or something really low, but other than that, he said he didn’t feel sick or anything, his throat felt and looked fine, he went #2 that morning (sorry, it’s true, we thought his stomach might hurt due to constipation). He went to church, and took a really long nap afterwards. We had to wake him up to go to Dillon’s parents house. He was complaining of his stomach hurting, but made it very clear to us that he didn’t feel sick to his stomach at all. He ate a good breakfast, but hardly any lunch or dinner. After he laid down at Dillon’s parents house, instead of playing with cousins, I said to Dillon on the way home, “I think there is something more serious going on. The fact that he has pain plus a fever makes me think it’s more than just a stomach ache.” He agreed, and I said if he felt that way tomorrow then I’d take him to the doctor.
We put Devon to bed at 8:00 pm when we got home. Dillon and I read our scriptures and both fell asleep on our bed. Devon woke up saying, “Ow, ow, ow.” over and over. I went in there and he felt hot again. I could tell it was something serious then, and called Dillon in the room. I said, “We need to do something. Something is very wrong.” Dillon said, “What should we do?” So I asked him to give Devon a blessing. He did, and I got him some Tylenol. Devon fell asleep, which I took as a good sign that the blessing and medicine were definitely helping him. Had he not fallen asleep, we would have taken him then.
After Devon was asleep, I came downstairs and typed in google: abdominal pain + fever. Most of what I found pointed either to a UTI, the stomach flu, or appendicitis. I didn’t think he had a UTI since he wasn’t peeing all the time. He’d just had the stomach flu twice and he wasn’t sick to his stomach. The appendicitis symptoms fit right on though. It said the pain didn’t have to be localized to the right side. We’d asked him if it hurt there, and he kept pointing to his belly button. After reading online, I had the thought cross my mind, “Devon’s going to be getting his appendix out tomorrow!”
I went to bed and we all slept through the night until about 5:30 am Monday morning.

I'm so glad he's doing better! Sometimes it feels like raising kids is a science experiment! It's so hard to know exactly what to do for them!
