Before I get to Day Three, I have to include a couple more things from Day Two: I forgot to mention the IV Dev had to get on Tuesday night about 1:00 am. He was sleeping when they had to wake him up, but Dee (again, my favorite nurse) gave him a horse blanket and a book as a prize for enduring it. The IV team is so great and FAST there, so that’s really nice, but that was his 3rd IV since it all started (not including the attempted one on Monday). He absolutely hated getting IV’s. It was really sad to see him have to get so many. That was the first thing he’d always ask, if someone new came in, if he would “have to get pokes?”
At one point Tuesday night he was screaming and crying so loud that some nurses from another hallway came in to ask if we needed help!
I also forgot to mention the pie incident on Tuesday. He was hungry, as everyone knows, and there was a staff party going on outside that you could see quite well. I looked out the window to see them throwing chocolate pies into each others faces. Totally random, huh?! So I didn’t want Devon to see it going on, so I started to cruise him by quickly in his wheelchair. But this lady, who I’m sure had great intentions, stopped us and said to Devon, “Did you see what they were doing out there???!!! They are throwing pies at each other!!! And you know what? Those are the BEST pies I’ve ever tasted!!!” She was so excited to show him. So of course, Dev points and looks out the window crying, “I wanna go out there! I wanna go have pie!” So sad.
While I was gone Tuesday morning and Dillon was with him for a few minutes, a big poodle came to visit all the kids. Too bad Dev wasn’t feeling better, but aren’t they awesome at Primary Children’s???
He was on morphine for most of Tuesday.
I think that’s all the details I forgot to mention!
On to Day Three!
He could EAT! The surgeon came at about 8:30 am or so and gave us the go-ahead, and he could eat whatever he wanted. YEA! I cannot begin to tell you how excited Devon was (and me!). I read the menu to him for breakfast, and when I got to the pancakes, his eyes got SO big and he got a huge grin on his face and asked, “I can have pancakes?” When I said yes, he was super excited. I was talking on the phone to my mom and I was telling her he could have food, and Dev turned to me while I was still talking to her and whispered, “And donuts!” He started eating the pancakes by himself, but eventually, Dillon fed him his pancakes and then Devon told him he’d share a donut with him, which was really sweet since the day before he didn’t want anyone to touch them but him.
Dev said it didn’t hurt to use the bathroom anymore. Good!
So we had our friend Michelle come with her kids and brought him Legos, which was also very sweet of them. Kim and Andrea and all their kids came after them. Devon was in Heaven:). Don’t you love how that rhymes? He seriously was loving showing the kids the rounds. The wagon and outside also. He wanted to ride the elevators down with them when they left. When they got there though, he quietly got out of bed, opened the top drawer where he thought the donuts were, closed it, opened the next one and got them out. He showed them and opened the box so they could have one. He didn’t even have one. It was just so super sweet. It nearly made me cry, because I knew how attached he had been to those the day before. He’s just a sweet, awesome boy. When we went outside with them, he was about to pull the wagon with 2 kids in it! He was totally having fun, but I felt like he was also probably overdoing it a little bit. He was just feeling so much better than the day before. After they left, we went to the playroom, and played and played. He was nearly running he was so excited. He was just so dang cute and sweet. But he totally did overdo it. We came back to his room so he could lay down, but he was in pain by then. Luckily he told me it didn’t hurt when I lifted him into bed. I think it was this point that he tearily said, “Mom, you told me they weren’t going to cut me.” I reminded him of our conversation after the surgeon told us he was going to have surgery. He didn’t remember it at all. I was sad that he thought I lied to him. But he gets over things pretty easy, and hopefully he believes me.
I loved the way he walked this day. His arms were held up a little, and he hunched over a bit because he said it hurt to stand up straight.
He also made sound effects for EVERYTHING. It was so funny, and not something he normally does. So he’d paint and make a noise for each stroke, all while smiling happily. He’d start snorting like a pig in the hall walking around and just giggle to himself. We saw a book character we recognized from a book called Cookies and Milk. Dev said, “Yep, cookies and milk, glug glug!” and giggled. We’d go down the little hill slope in the hall and he’s say, “Wee!” Every sound was pretty much followed by a cute little laugh and grin. I loved it!
My mom came that night so I could go home and see Bailey and Carson for a couple hours. Dev showed her the playroom and went to sleep! He was asleep when I got back. It was good to see my other kids, but I didn’t feel like I could get back to Devon fast enough. I was just so worried he’d have to get an IV while I wasn’t there, or something else might make him sad and I wouldn’t be there. But all went fine while my mom was there. Yea!
It was just such an amazingly better day. I was so glad. I don’t know how people deal with so much hardship in their lives. This was so short-lived…and it really drained me emotionally! So it was very rejuvenating to me to have him have such a great day.
His hands were so bruised and sore from the IV’s. Every 6 hours he was getting a really strong antibiotic, but every time he got it, he’d cry because it hurt his hand. That night, since he kind of lost his appetite and wasn’t eating or drinking much, he had to have fluids through his IV. I was bummed since I knew it’d make him have to get up and go to the bathroom. So it was another hard night. Again, about 1:00 am his IV wasn’t working great, so they almost did another one, but thankfully the IV team got it to work with some wiggling around, which still made him scream, but it wasn’t as bad as a new IV.
And that concludes day 3! Much better, huh!?

You're doing such a great job journaling all of this for him to look back on! He was so sweet to share, I was very impressed!

It's almost like you couldn't tell he had such a hellish day the day before. He was doing so well and you seemed, tired, but doing well. It's amazing the difference a day can make. . .
